On Thursday, Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs outlined Canada’s priorities for the upcoming G-8 Summit to be held in Muskoka, Ontario.
Under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Conservative Government is taking action to help Canada recover from the global economic recession and we will emerge stronger than ever. The G-8 Summit provides a unique opportunity for Canada to show leadership on the world stage.
The G-8 Summit will focus on broader issues of development, democracy, peace and security. Our Government believes that close cooperation of friends and like-minded allies is truly the best way to address terrorism and piracy as well as the problems of poverty and underdevelopment.
Safety at home and abroad is important to our Government. We believe that by cooperating with our G-8 partners, we can also address the gravest threat to world security: nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands.
As host of the G-8 and G-20 summits, we understand that global security begins at home. We must be prepared to respond to any possible situation or threat and we will not be influenced by thugs who want to disrupt the summits.
Canada is on track to host safe and secure G-8 and G-20 summits. The Integrated Security Unit and its partners have a comprehensive approach to security planning. The security plan has been developed by Canada’s best experts in the field.
Canadians can be proud our Country was chosen to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and now the G-8 and G-20 summits. This is ‘Canada’s Year’ to show leadership on the world stage.
