On Thursday, Ministers Peter MacKay and Jean-Pierre Blackburn, and Parliamentary Secretary Laurie Hawn announced that Canadian Forces Bases Bagotville in Quebec and Cold Lake in Alberta would be the homes of Canada’s new Joint Strike Fighter F-35s.
Under the Canada First Defence Strategy, our Conservative Government is providing our men and women in uniform with the tools and equipment needed to do the difficult and demanding jobs Canadians ask of them. The recent announcement of the purchase of sixty-five F-35 Lightning II aircraft is just one step our Government is taking to rebuild Canada’s Armed Forces.
Unlike the Liberals, who ripped up a contract to purchase EH 101 Helicopters two decades ago, never replaced the aging Sea Kings and sent our troops to Afghanistan in jungle-green camouflage, our Conservative Government is standing up for our soldiers, sailors and airmen and airwomen. We are taking action after the Liberal-led “Decade of Darkness.”
The F-35 purchase will help strengthen our ability to protect and patrol our own borders, while bringing unprecedented economic benefits to Canadian businesses across the country. In fact, for the communities surrounding the two bases, and for the many Armed Forces members who work and train within them, today’s announcement provides a welcome stability and ability to plan for the future.
With the addition of the F-35s, our Conservative Government is helping Canada’s Armed Forces protect the safety and security of Canadians well into the 21st century.
There can be no doubt, the F-35 Lightening II fighter fleet is the best option for Canada.
